Types of Phase Converters
There are many different types
of phase converters, and we
will give you a brief
description of each one in
the following paragraphs
below.
Static-Phase Converters: These are
one of the first phase
converters, and they do not
actually change single-phase
into three-phase power.
These phase converters
generate a third-phase
electrical power current for
only seconds during start-up
of electrical motors, which
forces the motor to continue
running on one-phase
electrical currents. They work
OK only if you have only
one three-phase piece of
equipment and work on less
powerful electrical
applications such as drill
presses, small milling
machines, mixers, bench
grinders, etc. For more
information on
Static-Phase Converters.
Rotary-Phase Converters: The most popular
converter in the
phase converter family, and
they
are designed to power all
types of equipment from small
to larger
equipment.
Rotary-phase converters can be used to
power more than one piece of
equipment at a time. They provide a
continuous source of
three-phase power. A quality
rotary-phase converter uses a
balanced three-phase
generator with power factor
correction. Properly
installed, these converters
can operate for 35 years or
longer with no major
problems. For more

Digital-Phase Converters: These phase converters are
all electronic in nature and
non-mechanical. The benefits
of digital-phase converters are
that they
are very quiet and
are supposed to produce and maintain a
balanced power load. Because of
their sensitive, complex
electronic nature, they can
experience burnout by power surges and
lightning strikes. For

CNC-Phase Converters: The CNC-phase converters
provide balanced voltage for
computer operated and
voltage-sensitive machines.
CNC-phase converters have
lower harmonic distortion
and a smooth sine wave.

A good source to learn more
about phase converters is
Phase
Converters FAQ.
It provides excellent
information about the
different types of phase
converters. Another
excellent site, which provides
ratings on phase converters
is the
U.S.
Phase Converter Standards.
The following chart compares
each manufacturer based on a phase
converter for a
10HP motor. We rated each
company with a one to five
star rating, five stars being the highest
and one star the
lowest.
*Compared models that use active generators
and found that they are higher
quality - this rating is not
for lesser quality converters
using electric motors.
Also, models rated on the materials
used to manufacturer the
phase converters.

Converter Manufacturer
Review
page
gives more details on how
ratings are determined. In
our findings,
ACE
Phase Converters
rated the highest because
they manufacturer a true
three-phase converter. Their phase converters were
durable and manufactured
with high quality materials,
and their ten-year warranties
on their products were
outstanding. Pricing was
excellent comparably in the
market place. Great Phase Converter Articles
